Merrill Civil War carbineMerrill Civil War carbine, 58 calibre

This carbine was a muzzle-loader. You would measure your gunpowder, then put it in the end of the barrel. Once you had put in a ball and tamped it down, you would then put in a wad of cloth cut to the right size to hold the ball and powder in the barrel. A percussion cap would be placed on the cap holder so that the hammer would strike the cap. When you pulled the trigger, the hammer would strike the cap, ignite the gunpowder and fire the rifle.
